Anup Rej was brought up in an atheist family where divinity and spiritual matters had no place. However, he was caught up with an experience of a world which seemed to reside outside the perceivable reality in an early age. He learnt to be compassionate to the living world and an inner guide became the teacher of moral in his life. He grew up with a strong sense of righteousness and justice without adhering to any religious belief and practice. In the youth he became strongly attracted to the philosophy of existentialism. A desire to achieve freedom which may help to maximize human potential to experience life`s multifarious possibilities remained central to his activities. During his stay in New York, where his wife worked in the Norwegian Delegation to the UN, he acquired knowledge about human rights and the Universal Declarations by the international organization. It influenced him to seek a philosophical basis of moral which would be free from dogmas and interests of the particular groups of people and culture. He found moral as an intractable intellectual problem and therefore sought answers from his inner guide. However,
the answers became allegorical and difficult to interpret. In 2012 he again took up the question of moral for intellectual enquiry from the point of views of sociology, biology, psychology, and activities of the brain. The freedom of the individuals in finding ways of self development so that one may maximize the experience of life in its fullest possibilities on one side and the necessity of sacrificing one`s freedom to make room for others`freedom and self-realization on the other side is the main basis of his moral thinking. Compassion and love are central in inspiring man to sacrifice one`s own freedom for others, which may help individual to experience life in a greater context beyond one`s own limited perception and understanding of life. In 2014 he published “Book of Will and World: A Foundation of Moral Universalism” in the “Books of Existence” series where the first part deals with his intellectual striving to understand moral. In the second part he has added the answers which he had received my years ago from his inner guide.
